It was wonderful to read the story behind the rescues that I'd been reading about through email about SPCA International and their Baghdad pups - safely bringing the cats and dogs - and recently even a donkey named Smoke (his story is not in the book) from an abusive and deadly existence in Iraq to America and the families of the soldiers - men and women- who relied on them and loved them. These animals are fiercely protective of our soldiers and they share a strong bond. Not all the stories end happily -- but it is an amazing mission that these folks do to bring these loved animals to safety.

That are stories that make me doubt and believe all at the same time. I understand military reasoning but still, I don't get it why they wouldn't take any dogs back home. It's redundant to repeat everything here. Read it; it's touching and makes you wonder and cry. Gryphon Air should be rewarded with a new prize created for them alone.
As an animal lover I could not put this book down. I learned more about the terrible conditions our troops are bravely serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The loving stories of each of the animals written by the soldiers will grab your heart. So many amazing people, especially terri Crisp did back overflips to bring so many of these soldier's buddies back home. It was a real page turner for me and I also shed a few tears.
The book was quite enlightening. I knew our military sometimes were fortunate in getting their pets home to the States, but I did not know there were that many pets to be transported. The book makes us acutely aware of just how important it is for us to help our troops and their pets.
If you are an animal advocate as I am you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Keep the kleenex tissue close by, brings tears, and joy and hope that mankind even in places were the worse shows up in people, that love of these wonderful GI's and the pets that become a part of their deployment and journey mean the world to them. Not only in the war zone, but to have in their hearts knowing that when they return home these beloved pets will be there waiting because of the help of this wonderful organization. I am so happy that I am a member I never knew before reading this book that they were involved at this level, it made my heart feel open and happy. A very inspirational story. If your like me I became so involved in these various stories that it felt like I knew these pets and the men and women who loved them personally. These service people put their life's on the line every day for our freedom, and this is just one wonderful way we can say "thank you" to them. Wonderful also how it helps them get over the PTSD when they come home. Sad though how other cultures unknowingly abuse and hurt animals, because they just don't understnad or are not taught better. They are after all; God's creatures large and small. If you ever had a beloved animal in your life, you do realize they are not just pets, they are family. I loved this book, hated to finish it, wanted to keep reading more.
This was a great book documenting the transport of pets that our military adopted while in the Middle East. These animals are therapeutic to these soldiers but you can also see how the military don't want them to adopt animals that could cause them to get killed.....Kudos to the people who made it possible to get these animals back to the states. They took a lot of chances and some of their ventures left you at the edge of your seat. At the end of the last transport you could finally heave a sigh of relief! A very good book!
I'm always uplifted by the stories of Military Working Dogs and their important roles in wartime. The bond
created between dogs and soldiers is very strong, life-saving in many ways, so it is no wonder that these
soldiers want to bring their buddy home with them when they leave the service. The difficulties encountered
by soldiers who want to bring their dog-buddies home is very discouraging, but they surmount all these
difficulties and in the end prevail.
War is hell - no other human activity displays the evil side of our world. It's rare that a TRUE STORY comes along that inspires and lift's-up our spirits when written about this subject.

As a dog lover, I was deeply moved by the effect the interaction between the soldiers and the working dogs had on each other. In many cases, the animals saved lives and inspired courage among the handlers. So what do you do when it's time to leave the war zone? What happens to the dogs?
