Who Needs Enemies Harri Phillecky PI edition by Keri Arthur Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Good first effort (new series, that is, from an experienced author). Harri is an engaging character with a really screwed-up family - always a fun story background - and a lot of friends of various species. We need to learn a lot more about those friends and those species, though, things that are only hinted at as "Enemies" careens along; but as with any series it can take two or three installments before the author (and her readers) begin to feel comfortable in their world. None of which should put you off from this book; it's a terrifically fun read and holds a LOT of promise for Harri & company in the future. One other less pleasant note: this book, as well as being the first Harri novel, is Ms. Arthur's first go at self-publishing ... and it shows. Not that there were outright typos, no, but here and there I crashed into a place where a word was obviously missing and, as I recall, at least one place where a word was repeated (ie, "of of"), missed in the editing/proofreading process. Come on, now, this isn't rocket science - it's drudge work that STARTS with spell-check and then continues with careful, meticulous, PAINSTAKING re- and re-reading of the manuscript before it's converted to epub/mobi. And again AFTER the conversion. Perhaps the fact that this author has had commercial editors and an agent for so long partially explains the goofs (who really believes that we miss so many things as we write?) - but if self-publishing is your future, Keri Arthur, PLEASE be more careful, or else find another set of eyes to proofread your proofreads. I loved the story and the character and highly recommend the book ... but it might have earned that 5th star if I hadn't been distracted by "typo" glitches nearly a dozen times.

Who Needs Enemies Harri Phillecky PI edition by Keri Arthur Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I'm a Keri Arthur fan but not a fan of this book. I just didn't like the characters and felt it was a little too bleak for me. Harrietta the main character is a half elf half siren. She is hated by her elf family who are a race that do not condone emotions and constantly scheme. They are very hateful and don't appreciate Harri's existence. This alone doesn't make the story bleak but when Harri is constantly verbally abused by an elf uncle who she thinks has some care for her it makes for a depressing read.
The crimes that Harri is trying to solve involves the murder of a siren. Harri is asked to solve because she was part of that community and supposedly the police can't get enough information. Then you learn in the book the police have figured out who killed the siren and have all sorts of information Harri doesn't know.
Maybe I'm sick of main characters being detectives who really don't seem to have any abilities. Or I'm sick of weak characters that allow themselves to be abused by poisonous relatives they should have dumped long ago. I guess this just wasn't the storyline for me and I want suspense and drama with some backbone. I want my characters to have struggles but not so bad that I wonder how they can deal with such an existence.
I have been reading Keri Arthur books for years. I am really quite shocked at how many grammatical errors there are. (And no, I am not referring to the garbled dragon speak - that ploy is understood.) No matter how interesting the story, grammatical errors makes a reader's interlude into suspended reality crash down and deflects continued enjoyment of the story. I hope future reissues of older Keri Arthur books are cleaned up prior to their reissuance. Samples "I started the car then said, 'Where do you staying at the moment?'" "Again, I normally I wouldn't mind."
You won't find any werewolves or vampires in this world set in Australia. What you do get are sirens, elves, ogres, trolls, dwarves, gargoyles, dark fae, gnomes, dragons, witches and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. None are considered monsters although some groups are better liked than others.
Harri--short for Harriet--is half siren and half elf. She works as a PI with her friend Ceri, a former cop and while trying to build their business Harri also works as a photographer.
Her dragon friend, Keale, slams into a helicopter killing the four onboard. Harri is a witness and captures everything on camera. He's drunk out of his mind and shouldn't have been capable of flying and too many things just don't add up. She's determined to get to the bottom of this to prevent her friend from spending years in prison. At the same time she's approached by Lyle, her elven uncle and the only member of that side of the family willing to have anything to do with her. His siren girlfriend is missing and he hires Harri to find her.
This story is an investigative mystery with a number of twists. Non-sexual tension is provided with the presence of a former lover/cop who is back in town making things awkward for Harri. What makes this a fun read are the very eclectic group of friends Harri has, from all walks of life; some of whom take serious advantage of her, and yet we see why she doesn't mind. Her elven family is something else and much of the drama comes from that side of the family.
Unlike her other books, the text has not been Americanized. At the front of the book we're given a short list of some items or terms that are used differently. There are others that could have been included on that list, but it's easy enough to figure those out. The book is self-published, so there are definite editing errors, although some of those are probably cultural speech differences.
Harri is smart, likeable, capable and loyal to her friends and family. There's action, mystery and quite a bit of humor. This could easily be a series and I sincerely hope it becomes one. I found the story, especially the characters, to be quite enjoyable.
