I seem to have a short attention span lately, but while this is a lengthy tale of a dying, troubled feral dog a woman and her daughter found, rescued, and turned into a well trained agility competitor, it kept my attention to the end. The woman perseveres in spite of issues with money and time, and some aggression issues between the dog and her family, visitors and her existing pet. The main characters -the woman, her daughter, the main rescue organization that helped her, are very well drawn, and the dogs are characterized as completely as the selected people. It's rare to find someone who can portray dogs as thoroughly as people. The descriptions and dialogue are also professionally handled. The woman running a small rescue organization and her troubles are also nicely conveyed. The ending is a happy one for all concerned. This is worth the purchase for anyone interested in dogs, agility training for dogs, or rescue. It's a good dog story, the dogs and the author's daugher who trains the rescue dog are very nicely drawn.

The one issue I had with the book is that it is sometimes slowed by the author recounting conversational prayers. If you believe that God watches every sparrow fall, and has a plan for you to learn from every trouble, this book is right up your alley. I thought some of those asides were a bit long winded, however valid to the book's ultimate message, and could have used some judicious trimming while still making the same points. At times I think it slowed the story, though as they are in letter form, they are easy to skim or skip. Even if you occasionally decide to skim some of the prayers -- that to me seemed more of a personal nature between the author and God and not for me to intrude on, however inspirational the book is supposed to be -- the bulk of the book is solid and a good read.

I'm Listening With a Broken Ear Vicky Kaseorg 9781463711047 Books Reviews

This is the first time I've given a book a 5-star review. I'm a sucker for wonderful dog stories, of course, but what generated a 5-star review here is the honesty of the author and how wonderfully she handled what could have been disastrous namely, the self-aggrandizing, self-congratulating, self-righteous, rationalizing--even lazy--nature of humans.

We *all* do it--we strive for inertia; we want to wait for others to save the world (or the dog); we wish for a parade in our honor when we actually take some action--but not too many people would or could have been frank and straightforward about this, and it could have been horrible and cloying. The narrator could easily have become a character that generates dislike in a reader, but the author handles this so beautifully, subtly, and humorously that the reader is taken with a narrator whose self-important thoughts come around not just to self-deprecation and humility but a truer understanding of herself (and others) as a human being--her faults and failings, her weaknesses, but also her strengths, her value, her quality--the things that we show the world and the things that we keep hidden--the things, both good and "bad," that make humans humans... all couched in a lovely story about dogs and animals and the realities of rescues and contemporary life.

Although I think I'm doing a poor job of explaining this, the author's accomplishment here may indeed be worthy of being featured on national news. -)
This author is very amusing in her sometimes woeful tale of taking in a rescue dog and the issues that follow. You'll have many a laugh out loud moment as you follow the ups and downs of training a dog who seems untrainable. While the dog had aggression issues for quite a long time, Vicky and her lovely daughter do everything within their power to train and make this pet loved and lovable. The story has a nice flow to it even though at times it becomes a tad long-winded. Vicky finds a wonderful rescue center and the owner and her husband help Vicky understand both of their dogs' issues and how one impacts the other. Vicky's daughter is determined to make Honeybun an agility dog and her perseverance is more than admirable for an 11 year old! You will applaud her efforts as well as Honeybun's. Enjoyable read. An occasional editing error, but nothing glaring.
I am a dog lover, and I am an agnostic. I find dogs to be like little buddhas, and I am not a Buddhist. I am a firm agnostic. When recommended this book, the title and cover photo were enticing enough to convince me to give Vicky my most prized possession, my time, and in the end, I am thankful that Vicky gave me/us hers.

Stories of redemption are always good, and when they involve dogs, I find it hard to resist. When I started this book, I was a little repulsed by the Christian tone, but I chose to stick with it. Thankfully I am fortunate enough to know that many things are not as they appear. There can often be a cover or appearance that hides treasure. So I dug in, and I read, and I did laugh and cry.

Boy am I glad I did. To use a metaphor, the marrow of the bone that is this book was worth the effort. I know that most well told stories are more than the shell, or bone, there is often more to it, layers, inferences, and it seems clear that any dog with a bone patiently works for that treat inside.

This is a well told story and thoroughly entertaining(I admit I skimmed over her prayers). I suppose we all suffer the same life. In that, I felt like I was a comrade and relating to her struggle was as easy as could be.

There is no shortage of suffering in this world, both animals and people are often left alone, and in the worst cases, without capacity to survive, with little choice. And any source of inspiration, Christian or other, anyone finds seems like a good thing to me. I may not be a Christian, but I am human, and I love. After reading this book I felt less lonely and that there is a little less suffering in the world.
