First book in the Spenser series, I believe -- and it established all the fundamentals that characterized Spenser stories going forward the way it paints pictures of Boston, the cops, the victims and of course Spenser himself smart, tough, literate, thoughtful, witty. He hasn't yet met Susan Silverman, and Hawk has not yet appeared, so it's just Spenser, and sorta all the more powerful because he's pretty much fighting alone. (He does meet Brenda Loring in this book, so not all is lost... -)

If you've gotten hooked on Spenser, be sure to read this first story; if you haven't read any Spenser books but love finding a new series to get hooked on, start with this one and if you like it you'll be glad to know there are many more that follow.
I'm a big fan of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels. Nobody does detective - private eye novels better than Parker. I liked the television show "Spenser For Hire", loosely based on the books, but the books are much better. Most of the main characters are a little different than the TV show, except for Hawk. Avery Brooks nailed it. His Hawk is exactly like Hawk in the novels. I've bought the first 15 from The Godwulf Manuscript through Crimson Joy and have been reading them it order. I'm currently on the 13th, Taming A Sea-Horse, Once you start they are hard to put down. What you might call, "A page turner". Very entertaining.
I have decided to 're visit the Spenser series in order. This is a book that I read 30 years ago -fresh out of college. At that time I related to the college kids. This time I related to the adults in the story. It's amazing what a difference it makes! It's like reading an entirely different book. Also Parker's descriptive passages recreate the 70s from dress to architecture.
I have been a big fan of Mr. Parker's other series works, like Jesse Stone and his westerns, but never made an effort to like the Spencer novels. I think I was turned off by the TV show, maybe didn't like the characters? Now that Mr. Parker is gone, and someone (family, publishers?) is trying to pass off some writers who aren't good enough to create their own books to continue his, I am turning to the Spencer series, and able to read them as if they were new - which to me they are. There are enough of them, fortunately, to entertain me for years to come, and they are excellent mysteries.
In his first Spenser novel "The Godwulf Manuscript", Robert B. Parker sets the playing field for the modern detective; creating a formula that hundreds of imitators will attempt to recreate over the next four decades. This story of a purloined document is background scenery for the birth of one of the best known investigators since Holmes. Witnessing Parker craft Spenser piece by piece; his quips, quotes and culinary skills, is satisfying, especially for long time fans rereading the series. Readers new to the series should enjoy the snappy pace and direct writing style, even without nostalgic benefits.

Regardless of being brand new to Spenser or a returning veteran, all visits to the penultimate Boston gumshoe should begin with this novel. Meeting Spenser chronologically will serve to heighten enjoyment from not only the written series, but also provide deeper understanding of the incredible television series "Spenser, For Hire".
